Geocache Description:

This collection of caches has nothing to do with the Church Micro series in the UK. Given that the Australian 2016 census indicates that No Religion and Jedi Knight are the fastest increasing classifications of the optional religion question "What is the person's religion?" it is not surprising that there is surfeit of empty churches that have been repurposed.

Skilly hill Chapel

A little History

The upper Skilly Chapel land was donated by Malachi Brain back in 1855 for a Bible Christian Chapel. At the time this was a strategic spot close to Gulf Road traffic through the Skilly Hills, the gulf road closed however before the opening of the sturdy stone chapel.

The Chapel was built by Mr Peacock in a gothic design with two windows down each side and an outside measurement of 30 feet by 20 feet with the walls measuring 20 inches thick. The original roof was constructed of stringy bark shingles and later replaced with galvanised iron with the floor and roof joists made from native pines, the floor itself was made from imported tongue and groove Baltic pine. The estimated cost of the building was £230.

On November 2nd the chapel was opened when Rev Thomas Hillman preached in the morning and Mr Parkin in the evening. The Zion chapel was closed in 1902.

During its time a fireplace was added and operated as a school 1868 to 1878 which saw two teachers starting with Sara Townsend followed by Issac Prior.

The chapel has been home to the boy scout movement, a chaff and fruit store and implement store until becoming a shell by 1940, more recently it has been restored as well a residence cottage and used as a function centre but now a private residence
