Spirit Quest - Machias Community Cemetery
The cache is located on away from any graves. It should be a very easy find especially with the use of the hint. As with any cemetery cache please be respectful of the grounds and any possible visitors or mourners that might not understand what we are doing. Even though there are no posted hours, please Limit your search to daylight hours only please. This means, do not seek this cache during hours of darkness, this is with respect to the cemetery.
The first internmet at this cemetery was in 1893, as of 2011 there were 686 internments. The Machias cemetery on the north side of Silva Street was founded in 1902, by Horas & Matilda Andrus. LE Andrus (son of Horas & Matilda) founded the south side as Mountain View Cemetery in 1911, by which time the north side was under his care as well following Horas passing. In the 1940's the cemeteries were sold to Everett Stringer, who would own them until his passing in 1982, but by this time a group of folks from nearby communities who had taken an interest in maintaining the cemeteries, and were able purchase the cemetery. Today both portions of the cemetery are known as Machias community cemetery.
