Geocache Description:

Cvinger

Cvinger

The prehistoric settlement near Dolenjske Toplice is a fortified settlement with an embankment and fortification wall that was inhabited in the 1st millennium BC. It is located on top of a 265 m high hill covered in forest, between the Krka River and the Sušica and Radeščica streams. The wall that surrounds the hill was archaeologically explored and reconstructed in several places.

There is also an archaeological path called Cvinger, which is equipped with informative boards and is approximately 2.5 km long. The path leads us through a forest covered in moss and points out interesting things along the way, such as the prehistoric settlement, the terrace area, the burial mound, the fortified entrance and the Cvinger Cave located on the top of the hill.

Cvinger cave

The Cvinger settlement is distinguished by the karst sinkhole on the top called Cvinger cave. It is also known as Keltska jama ("Celtic cave"). Whether it was known during the Hallstatt period or opened later remains a mystery that archaeologists and Novo Mesto speleologists have tried to solve. After years of research, they have found that the cave does not meet archaeological expectations as they have not found anything archaeologically interesting in it, which suggests that it was possibly blocked in the time of the settlement.

The cave was first mentioned in 1900 as a 20 m deep vertical cave. Then, based on the archaeologically colored excavations, speleologists deepened it to a depth of 54 m. The largest is the so-called boulder hall, which is 15 m high. Due to the depth and complexity of the terrain, the cave can only be entered by speleologists.
