Guangzhou fell to the People's Liberation Army on October 14, 1949. A decade later, the Guangzhou Liberation Memorial Statue was erected in Haizhu Square. However, during the Cultural Revolution, it was demolished to make way for a statue of Mao, though the reconstruction plans were ultimately abandoned. In July 1980, the PLA statue was reconstructed.
Engraved on each corner of the base is the phrase "All power belongs to the people," excerpted from the Constitution of China. Regrettably, this inscription is scarcely visible as people are prohibited from approaching the statue without trespassing onto the parterre. Nonetheless, accessing the cache does not necessitate entering the parterre.
