Acer pseudoplatanus L.
Sycamore also known as great maple, harewood, mock plane, Scotch plane and Scottish maple is a tree species in the family Sapindaceae, the lychee family. It is a broadleaf deciduous tree that can grow to 35m and live for 400 years, with opposite palmate 5-lobed leaves with leaf stalks often tinged red. Flowers are small, green-yellow growing in hanging spikes (racemes) of up to 100, appearing around May or June in the British Isles. The fruit is a double-samara which matures in autumn about four months after pollination and the dispersion is helped by the wind.
Sycamore is native to central, eastern and southern Europe. It is thought to have been introduced to the UK by the Romans. However, other reports suggest it was introduced to the UK in the Tudor era around the 1500s and was first recorded in the wild in 1632 in Kent.
Sycamore is attractive to aphids and therefore a variety of their predators, such as ladybirds, hoverflies and birds. Its hardwearing timber is excellent for carving, often used to make musical instruments, furniture and kitchenware. In Scotland, sycamores were once a favoured tree for hangings, because their lower branches rarely broke under the strain. Both male and female flowers produce abundant nectar, which makes a fragrant, delicately flavoured and pale-coloured honey. The sap rises vigorously in the spring and like that of sugar maple can be tapped to provide a refreshing drink, as a source of sugar and to make syrup or beer.
