Sunday, September 2, 1973 at 3:00 p.m.

I am standing in front of the city office of the car rental company "SU Interrent". Five brand new Mercedes 280SE are lined up in front of the office. All white, all polished to a high gloss.

During this time I worked part-time for this car rental company. Together with a few colleagues, we were responsible for taking the cars to where they were needed for rental the next morning. I did the job mainly because it was pure pleasure to drive through the Rhine-Main area on empty streets at night in all kinds of cars. A few days earlier I had the opportunity to drive a 280SE for the first time.

Regularly I never worked on Sundays. But this time the office manager asked me if I could be there at three on Sunday. I could. Of course I didn't know what to do.

Well then, besides me there were four other drivers. Nobody knew anything. It just said: "Now drive the five 280SE to the arrival at Frankfurt Airport." That's what happened. As soon as we drove up, we were personally instructed by Fritz Rau - the chief of the most important concert agency in Germany that time - that the Rolling Stones were about to come out of the airport building and that we should drive them safely to the Mannheimer Hof in the center of Mannheim. I had passed this hotel many times as my relatives lived nearby. So Fritz Rau ordered me to the head of the column with the 280SE entrusted to me.

The doors of the airport flew open and Keith Richards was the first to reach our motorcade between two really attractive girls and flopped down between the two in the leather chairs in the back of the car. As soon as it started, Keith Richards couldn't move fast enough. Well then, let's press the tube. I had already left the rest of the cars behind in the first roundabout at the airport and after 31 minutes (for 80 km) Keith Richards was standing in the hotel foyer with his girls. The others were another twenty minutes in coming. Then I got a close-up look at a bored Mick Jagger leaning against the reception desk.

So now you also know how the Stones got from their concert on Saturday, September 1st in the Wiener Stadthalle to their performance on Monday, September 3rd in the Mannheim Ice Rink.

Okay, I liked the Stones back then, but I wasn't a glowing fan. So I envied a colleague who also worked for SU Interrent. He hadn't seen the Stones, but he had the really lucrative job of driving the Stones' musical equipment in a 7.5-ton truck on the night from Saturday to Sunday from Vienna to Mannheim. When he arrived, the lock on the tailgate was broken and he couldn't lock the trunk. Nothing was stolen, he simply parked the truck backwards against the outer wall of the ice rink.

No question which of their songs is to be used for this mystery:
