André Heller caused a sensation in Lisbon in 1983 and in Berlin in 1984 with his 'Feuertheater'. A bombastic fireworks display was accompanied by classical music, which filled the cities with sound from gigantic speaker towers.
In 1986, the whole thing was imitated one size smaller in the Frankfurt Rebstock area. I remembered less the fireworks than the opening act. At dusk, 'Back to the Future' was presented open air on a huge screen, framed by towers of loudspeakers. We were lying on the lawn maybe a hundred feet from the screen, and then when the oversized speaker (see first image below) ruptured in the first shot, the sound wave shook the ground beneath us. We could physically feel the bass of 'Power of Love' in the grass. An unforgettable experience!
