新潟県境、戸隠連峰高妻山（標高2,353m）に源を発し、長野市中心部を流れ、丹波島橋近くで信濃川水系犀川に合流する。
源流部のブナ原生林の中80万株のミズバショウ群生地が自然園となっている。
裾花橋は、長野市中御所付近の国道19号で昭和30年(1955年）に作成された。
