Golf je eden izmed najstarejših športov na svetu. Različne oblike so se pojavile že v času Julija Cezarja in tudi na Kitajskem, kjer so igrali igro Chiuwan v enajstem stoletju. Vendar takšna igra, kot jo poznamo danes, izvira iz Škotske ali Nizozemske. Na Nizozemski se je takrat ta šport imenoval "spiel metten colven" oziroma igra igrana s palico. Na Škotskem so ga včasih poimenovali z izrazi "golff, golve, gouf in gowf".
Golf is one of the oldest sports in the world. Various forms appeared as early as the time of Julius Caesar and also in China, where they played the game of Chiuwan in the eleventh century. However, such a game as we know it today originated in Scotland or the Netherlands. In the Netherlands at the time, the sport was called "spiel metten colven" or a game played with a stick. In Scotland, it was sometimes called by the terms "golff, golve, gouf and gowf".
Prva golfska tekmovanja segajo v leto 1552, ko so prebivalci škotskega mesta St. Andrews dobili pravico uporabe zemlje za igranje golfa. Kljub temu golf ni vedno bil popularen. Škotski kralji James 2., 3. in 4. so prepovedali golf, saj so menili, da so ljudje porabili preveč časa za igranje in premalo časa za izpopolnjevanje lokostrelskih sposobnosti. To se je spremenilo, ko je kralj James VI. vzljubil golf in ga spet dovolil.
The first golf competitions date back to 1552, when the inhabitants of the Scottish town of St. Andrews get the right to use the land to play golf. Nevertheless, golf has not always been popular. Scottish Kings James 2, 3 and 4 banned golf because they felt that people spent too much time playing and too little time perfecting their archery skills. That changed when King James VI. fell in love with golf and allowed it again.
Prvi klub so leta 1744 osnovali Angleži. Prvi proizvajalec palic in žogic z dovoljenjem oblasti so bili Škoti in prva, še sedaj veljavna pravila golfa, so zapisali v golf klubu St. Andrews na Škotskem. Pravila so zapisali in oblikovali leta 1764.

Prve žogice so bile lesene, palice pa prav tako. Lesene žogice so nadomestile krhke žogice iz usnja, napolnjene s kuhanim gosjim perjem. Leto 1848 je pomenilo konec pernatih žogic. Nadomestile so jih žogice, izdelane iz gumi podobne snovi in iz posušenega mlečnega soka azijskega tropskega drevesa. Za proizvodnjo je bila precej cenejša in je s tem pripomogla k širjenju golfa.
The first balls were wooden, and the sticks as well. Wooden balls replaced the fragile leather balls filled with boiled goose feathers. The year 1848 marked the end of feathered balls. They were replaced by balls made from a rubber-like substance and from the dried milky sap of an Asian tropical tree. It was much cheaper to produce and thus helped to spread golf.
Palice so bile prvotno lesene in zato tudi manj trpežne, saj so se pogosto lomile. Zaradi tega so pričeli izdelovati kovinske palice iz posebnih zlitin, ki so v uporabi še danes. Najbolj pa so priljubljene palice iz plastičnih mas.
The rods were originally wooden and therefore also less durable, as they often broke. Because of this, they began to make metal rods from special alloys that are still in use today. The most popular are plastic rods.
Leta 1858 so prvič vpeljali golf igrišča z 18 luknjami, čeprav je to pomenilo, da so morali združiti več lukenj, da bi zmanjšali število. In 1858, 18-hole golf courses were first introduced, although this meant they had to combine several holes to reduce the number.
