Geocache Description:

There probably aren't a lot of people in town who remember the glory days of cycling in Boulder which lasted from 1975 to 1988.

It started with the Red Zinger in 1975 which morphed into the Coors Classic in 1980.  The final Coors race was in 1988.  At its prime, it grew to be the 4th largest cycling race in the world.  After humble beginnings in Boulder, it eventually expanded to include stages in Wyoming, California, Nevada and Hawaii.

Professional racing teams from all over the world raced in the Classic, including the famed US-based 7-Eleven team.  The race was usually held shortly after the Tour de France, and many teams from the Tour came to race in Boulder.

Cyclists Greg LeMond, Davis Phinney, Connie Carpenter, Rebecca Twigg, Jeannie Longo, Beth Heiden, Muriel Sharp, Marianne Berglund, Bernard Hinault, Andy Hampsten, Ron Kiefel, Alexi Grewal, Dale Stetina, Alan McCormack and many others competed over the years.

The Classic traditionally ended in North Boulder Park, often with upwards of 60,000 fans attending.

Visit the small commemorative monument at the given coords and learn about this amazing time in Boulder's history.  And tip your bike helmet to Davis Phinney, Boulder's own hometown champion, the only American to win 328 races.

To log this virtual cache, send me the number of "race babies" that resulted from the Classic.
