This is a virtual cache that is on the Yellowstone County Museum grounds. This cache centers on the steam locomotive that is on display there. As a youth growing up in eastern Montana, I can remember the steam trains coming through town. The smell of coal fires, the chuff-chuff of the engines, and the unforgettable sounds of the steam whistles.
Northern Pacific No. 1031 is a class L-7 0-6-0 steam engine it was built by Alco for the Northern Pacific railway. This was the last steam switcher to operate in Northern Pacific’s Billings, MT, yard until it was retired from service in 1956 and then donated to the Yellowstone County museum.
Your requirements to log this cache is to:
1. Name the city and state of manufacture.
2. Tell us what is meant by the “0-6-0” classification.
3. What was the year of manufacture.
Please send your answers to the CO’s via the Message Center. Do not post them here!
You should make time to visit the museum and the other features that are on the grounds.
