Geocache Description:

This is a virtual cache. There is no container at the published coordinates!

You may already know the story of Hachiko, the famous dog who loyally waited every afternoon at Shibuya Station for his master (Professor Hidesaburo Ueno) to return from working at the University of Tokyo. Sadly, in 1925 Professor Ueno suffered from a cerebral hemorrhage while at work, and never returned to Shibuya Station to greet Hachiko. Even after the professor's death, Hachiko continued to wait every day at the same spot and time, for nearly a decade. Hachiko is immortalized by a bronze statue at Shibuya Station Square, which is a popular meeting spot for tourists and locals. (There is a virtual geocache (GC8910V) at the Shibuya statue).

This virtual cache will take you to another bronze statue of Hachiko, located on the grounds of the Department of Agriculture at the University of Tokyo. This statue was erected on March 9, 2015, the 80th anniversary of Hachiko's death. Here the beloved Akita is joyfully reunited with Professor Ueno. The new statue was made possible through the assistance of an online charity and Faculty of Agriculture. It was sculpted by Tsutomo Ueda, and shows a very excited Hachiko jumping up to greet his master at the end of a workday. Ueno is dressed in a hat, suit, and trench coat, with his briefcase placed on the ground. Hachiko wears a studded harness as seen in his last photos. This statue embodies the depth of a dog's love for his human, radiating love, loyalty, and happiness.

Directions: Take the Namboku Line and exit at Todaimae Station. Use Exit 1 and walk a few moments then enter through the Nou-Seimon Gate on your left. The statue is located immediately to your left. If you are passing through the Main Campus, take the Overhead Foot Bridge and refer to #23 on any of the campus maps.

Logging Task

To log this virtual geocache, please attach a photo to your log showing yourself in front of the Hachiko/Ueno statue with your hand, your phone, or your caching name on a piece of paper. If you do not want to be in the photo, just your caching name displayed in one of these ways will suffice. Photos with just yourself, as well as altered photos or Google Street View screen shots, will not be accepted. Failure to follow these simple instructions will lead to a deleted log.

FTF kojy!
