History
Welcome to Winnipeg. This geocache is located on the traditional lands of Anishinabe (Ojibway), Ininew (Cree) Oji-Cree, Dene and Dakota. The name Winnipeg comes from the Cree for "muddy waters". The Winnipeg area was a trading centre for Aboriginal peoples prior to the arrival of Europeans.
Airport History
The airport opened in 1928 as Stevenson Aerodrome in honour of the noted Manitoba aviator and pioneer bush pilot, Captain Fred J. Stevenson. Stevenson Aerodrome was Canada's first international airport with Northwest Airways inaugurating a passenger and mail service between Winnipeg and Pembina, North Dakota in 1931.
In 1962, Stevenson Field was officially renamed Winnipeg International Airport. In 2006 it was renamed Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport in honour of the influential businessman and pioneer of Canadian commercial aviation from Winnipeg.Â
Unique Fact
The first official passengers to visit the newly constructed terminal in 2010 were Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.Â
