You are standing at the entrance to the old Whitney Memorial Airport (1935-1970). This structure stands in silent tribute to history along with: good government, economic policy, infrastructure, transportaiton, planning, growth, progress...
Erected as part of the Works Projects Administration (WPA) effort in1934-1935, projects like this helped the United Stated recover from the Great Depression of the 1930's by providing jobs, paychecks, and pride for people along with needed public infrastucture and art for the County.

You can still see portions of the Airports three runways over at Whitney Park along with the repurposed hangars on the Whitney Center property. Once you've seen it you will always see it.
