Geocache Description:

Pinnacle Overlook and the deeps of the Susquehanna River below it create a spectacular view upriver. Some points of the bottom of the river ("the deeps") below this point and further south are 130 feet below the water surface which puts the bottom several feet below sea level. The elevation here is over 650 feet above sea level. I was working on putting an Earthcache here, but the geology is so old, deep, inprecisely studied, and covered in river, that the tasks would be reading words when what we really want to do here is enjoy the awesome view. So ...

The Susquehanna River is one of the oldest rivers in North America. It is older than the Appalachian Mountains. It was flowing in the opposite direction when Africa and North America collided creating Pangaea. That collision created the Appalachian Mountains and reversed the flow of the river. Then erosion, erosion, erosion. Read more about the geologic history in this very accessible 2021 article by Jeri Jones.

From the Pinnacle, we look upriver and see the mighty Susquehanna flowing south toward the Chesapeake Bay. The river narrows here as it flows south. It's usually windy. We often see bald eagles soaring over the river. This was the place where I first saw a wild bald eagle. It was flying below my eye level. You are more likely to see turkey vultures and black vultures, but if the bird has a white head and tail, it's a bald eagle. Their populations have expanded, so it is very possible you will see one when you visit.

The overlook is wheelchair accessible and the terrain was bumpy until the state paved it in later 2023. Now it's smooth  The area is closed sunset to 8am.

There is no container here. To log this virtual cache, take and post a picture of you or your group or the scenery that you or a member of your group take at the location on or after the publication date of this cache. It would be great if you mentioned something about your visit in your log. For example, note the number of people in your group, where you are from, your elevation reading, whether you saw any bald eagles, or similar visit experiences.

I brought you here to enjoy the view.
Savor it.

tl;dr Beautiful old deep river. Enjoy view.
