Geocache Description:

You are about to visit one of the most photoed icon in the City of Detroit, The James Scott Memorial Fountain.

Belle Isle is now the 102nd Michigan state park and has been open to the public since 1880. This fountain has been a focal point since it first opened in 1925. The history of the fountain is remembered by the man who passed away in 1910 and left $200,000.00 to the city to have it built in his remembrance. By the time they built the fountain the $200,000.00 had been invested and the return allow a $500,000.00 gift for the cost of what you see here. James Scott’s father was very successful and left his son a large inheritance which is where most is written of James Scott’s lifestyle. Many see this fountain as James Scott’s final jab at the city and those that did not like his lifestyle. Know as a wealthy playboy who drank, gambled and had many women through his life. In those days he was very looked down on to the point that many of the city folks fought the building of the fountain at the time. James Scott hand picked Cass Gilbert to design and build the fountain which is mad of white marble with many brass fixtures and of course a large statue of the man himself, James Scott.

The posted cords are a very good place to start as you will be just above the lower bowl known as the lower cascade that leads into a reflecting pond.
To get credit for this cache you will need to visit the upper bowl which is 510 across the bowl.

Please email me in a timely matter with your answers to the questions below.
1. When you get to the top of the steps leading to the upper bowl turn to the middle cascade and from here count the number of spouts in the middle cascade?
2. Head to the upper bowl and take a lap of the upper bowl, as you do look at the manhole covers near the bowl and count how many hinges are left after all these years?
3. At the half way point you will see the statue of James Scott. Half way between James Scott and the upper bowl you will find paver bricks, what is written on the paver bricks here?

This entire cache is wheelchair accessible by using the the ramp post in the additional waypoints.

To enter Belle Isle State Park you will need either a Michigan State Park Passport or a day pass. Residents are $17.00 per year, non residence is $34.00 per year and the daily pass is $9.00 per day.
