Opened in 2021, Polar Park is home to the AAA affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, the Worcester Red Sox. The team had previously played in Pawtucket, Rhode Island from 1973-2020.
In August 2018, the team made the decision to move to Worcester. After a “name that team” competition, the Worcester Red Sox were officially given the nickname of the “WooSox” at a team branding event in November 2019. It was there that “Smiley Ball” became the team’s official logo. The Smiley Ball was created by local advertising agent, Harvey Ball in 1963. The batting stance of Smiley Ball integrates the swing of Red Sox sluggers Ted Williams and David Ortiz. His bat is emblazed with a ‘W’ for Worcester with a heart-shape in the middle, acknowledging Worcester’s motto: Heart of the Commonwealth.
Polar Park seats 9508 fans, a nod to the local ‘508’ area code. Polar Park gets its name from their major sponsor, Polar Cola, local makers and distributors of several beverages and sodas, produced in Worcester and family owned since 1882.
Ceremonial groundbreaking of the ballpark took place on July 11, 2019. Construction on the ballpark was temporarily suspended in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite this, the ballpark opened for baseball as planned in 2021 with the first home game played on May 11, 2021 vs. Syracuse.
