Geocache Description:

This cache brings you to some interesting historical information in a small passage between Main and Regent Streets. The tall buildings can interfere with GPS reception--the passage entrance is located between 143 and 149 S Main on the east side of the street.

The north wall of the passage is the Tribune Building which was built in 1924 for the Salt Lake Tribune newspaper. The newspaper occupied the building until 2004. The building is now occupied by a private university. The building's style, known as "2-part vertical block" is a common pattern seen throughout Utah.

Before the Tribune Building, this area was the site of a Pony Express station from 1860-1861. The Pony Express greatly reduced the the amount of time for mail to reach the western U.S. from Missouri. However, within 18 months, the first transcontinental telegraph line made the Pony Express obsolete. There is a monument to the completion of the telegraph line about 1 block north on Main Street.

Before the Pony Express station was here, this area, known as Block 70 was divided by the pioneers for homes. The large plaque on the ground describes the early settlement. Try to image what this area looked like in 1860!

Further to the east in the passage is a quote by Mark Twain about the time he spent in Salt Lake City.
