Välkommen till Bohus fästning

Bohus fästning byggdes 1308 på order av den dåvarande norske kungen Håkon V Magnusson. Syftet var att försvara det som då var Norges södra gräns. Fästningen har länge ansetts vara en av Nordens starkaste fästen och det har med tiden visat sig stämma bra. Trots inte mindre än 14 belägringar har Bohus fästning aldrig intagits.

Fästningen ligger på en 40 meter hög klippa på Bagaholmen, även kallad Fästningsholmen, där Göta Älv och Nordre Älv möts.

Fästningen har aldrig varit något enheltligt byggnadsverk, flera olika byggstilar har använts. Under åren har den använts som fästning, slott och enkel borg. Den har inhyst såväl kungligheter som fångar.

Mycket har hänt med fästningen under de dryga 700 år den funnits. Idag är den i första hand en ruin. Militären lämnade fästningen 1786 och 1789 bestämdes att den skulle rivas. Kungälvsborna fick då lov att hämta sten härifrån till sina privata husbyggen, vilket fick fästningen att förfalla till en ruin. Först i slutet av 1800-talet insåg man det historiska värdet och påbörjade restaurering.

Sedan 1935 är fästningen klassad som statligt byggnadsminne.

Det är gratis att besöka fästningen från utsidan och man kan göra det året om. Tänk dock på att det kan vara halt på sina ställen på vintern och lite lerigt efter regn. Man kan promenera runt den yttre muren eller längs vattnet. På sommaren kan du få samsas med betande djur om du går längs vattnet, men de brukar vara snälla, om än lite nyfikna ibland. Om du går genom hagarna med djur, glöm inte att de fötjänar respekt, skräm dem inte! Håll dig till de stigar som finns.

Till de postade koordinaterna kan man ta sig utan problem, även med barnvagnar och rullstorlar. Handikappparkering finns ca 10 meter bort vid biljettkiosken, se waypoint P1. Att ta sig vidare härifrån med barnvagn, rullstol eller kryckor görs på egen risk.

Vill man se fästningen från insidan kan man göra det mellan april och november, det kostar dock pengar. Öppettiderna varierar under året, så kolla upp det på fästningens hemsida, där finns även biljettinformation. Detta är dock inte nödvändigt för att logga cachen!

Att ta sig hit:
Att ta sig hit med bil går bra. Det finns gott om parkeringsmöjligheter, se waypoints.
Buss 401 samt X4 stannar på Strandgatan i Kungälv (hållplats Fars Hatt). Därifrån är det ca 425 meters promenad till de postade koordinaterna. Buss 37, 39, 311, 401 samt X4 stannar vid Eriksdal (hållplats Eriksdal) på Hisingen. Därifrån är det ca 500 meters promenad (om man går genom Fästningsparken) till de postade koordinaterna.

Welcome to Bohus fortress

Bohus fortress was built in 1308 by orders from the Norwegian king Haakon V Magnusson. The purpose was to defend what then was the southern border of Norway. The fortress was long considered to be one of the strongest forts in the Nordics and time has proven that to be correct. In spite of no less than 14 sieges, Bohus fortress was never captured.

The fortress is situated on a 40 meter high rock on Bagaholmen, also known as Fästningsholmen, where Göta river och Nordre river comes together.

The fortress was never a uniform structure, a great variation in building styles has been used. Over the years it has been used as fortress, castle and simple stronghold. Royals has stayed hese, as well as prisoners.

A lot has happened to the fortress during the 700 years it has been around. Today it is mainly a ruin. The miltary left the fortress in 1786 and in 1789 it was decided that is was to be torn down. The citicens of Kungälv was allowed to take stone from the fortress as building material for their own houses, which caused the fortress to fall into ruin. Only at the end of the 19th century the historical value was recognized and restauration commenced.

Since 1935 the fortress was designated a national historic building and part of Sweden’s heritage.

It is free to visit the outside of the fortress and you can do so all year. Be aware that the paths may be slippery in places in the winter and muddy after rain. You can walk along the outer wall or along the shore. In the summer time you may have to share the area along the shore with grazing live stock, but they are usually friendly and sometimes a bit curious. If you walk through the pastures, don’t forget to show the animals respect, do not frighten them! Stay on the paths that goes through the area.

There should be no problem getting to the posted coordinates, even with a stroller or wheelchair. Disabled parking is available in several places, the closest is only 10 meters away, by the ticket kiosk, see waypoint P1. Going further from here with a stroller or wheelchair is at your own risk.

If you want to have a look the inside of the fortress you can do so from April through November, subject to entrance fee. Opening hours vary throughout the year, check the fortress’ website, you can find ticketing information there as well. However, this is not required to log the cache!

Getting here:
Getting here by car is no problem. There are plenty of parking options, see waypoints.
Bus 401 and X4 stops on Strandgatan in Kungälv (stop name Fars Hatt). From there it is about a 425 meter walk to the posted coordinates. Bus 37, 39, 311, 401 and X4 stops at Eriksdal (stop name Eriksdal) on Hisingen. From there it is about a 500 meter walk (if you walk through Fästningsparken, the Fortress Park) to the posted coordinates.
