Geocache Description:

Welcome to Tecumseh Park

Tecumseh Park is situated in the centre of the municipality of Chatham. It is the home to many outdoor events but it also has a significant historical, cultural and even botanical importance.

History

This location has been strategically important in the very early days of Canada. Here is where the river Thames and the McGregor Creek join together and there is a perfect lookout towards the west. In 1794 Lieutenant-Governor John Graves Simcoe ordered the construction of a blockhouse, which was planned to be the home of a naval arsenal as part of Upper Canada's defences to the west. The blockhouse was abandoned in 1797 and later in 1798 moved to the town of Sandwich.

In 1813 this site was the location for the "skirmish" between the American forces and Chief Tecumseh and his warriors. Tecumseh was shot in the arm and his army had to retreat.

In 1905 the Armory was constructed and became the home of the volunteer militia of the 24th Kent Regiment until 1954. The Essex and Kent Scottish Regiment occupied the building until 2006. Nowadays the Armory is used for social functions and events.

Culture

The park is home to a bandshell where every Wednesday during the summer - weather permitting - the Chatham Concert Band performs. The Band was organized in 1927 and in 2022 they celebrated their 95th season.

Adjacent to Tecumseh Park is the Chatham Cultural Centre with the Thames Art Gallery, Kiwanis Theatre, and the CK Museum.

Botany

Tecumseh Park used to have extensive flower gardens but they had to make way to allow for bigger events that would draw bigger crowds. Still, if you look around, you'll find some very old trees, like the heritage tree and - across the street to the east - the huge ginko.

  4. What is the EXACT name of the bandshell in the park?
