This virtual will bring you to the Volunteer Firefighters Memorial in Piscataway. I chose this location because my brother-in-law has been a volunteer firefighter in this town for almost 60 years. I have watched his dedication grow to teaching at the fire academy and up to last year, he was still answering calls.
The main memorial consists of a firefighter kneeling down just above a flat area. This statue was designed with their annual memorial service in mind. Every year on the Thursday before Memorial Day, the 6 fire companies from town gather here for a special service to honor the individuals from each company who passed away during the previous year. They read off the name and a representative from the persons fire company places a helmet on the slab in front of the kneeling firefighter. It is a very somber and moving ceremony. This statue was dedicated October 1983.
The wall behind the statue is a list of the people who have died and were honored here. The six companies are labeled across the top. This was dedicated October 1992.
The Maltese Cross over in the corner was added about 5 years ago.
Newest addition here appears to be a piece of steel from the World Trade Center.
