Welcome to downtown Pepperwood!
Nestled in the backwoods of Avenue of the Giants, there lies the most amazing diamond in the rough: a larger-than-life ear of corn! Dedicated to the people of Pepperwood that lost their lives and homes in 1964 in a 100-year flood that wiped out the town.
This majestic monument stands over six feet tall and, this beauty is detailed and brightly painted!
Located at a turnout on the east side of the road near Pepperwood, this carved ear of corn is a monument to the town which sits on a floodplain of the Eel River, that makes it a fertile place for growing produce that is sold at the nearby roadside produce stands.
The monument is a gift from the town of Fortuna, 17 miles north on Highway 101.
This cache came to fruition when at an event that humboldt flier hosted he told me that he had been awarded a virtual and he asked me if I had any ideas. I had been thinking about how there should be one at the Big Corn and a month ago I had been at the corn getting data and coords just in case I might get awarded a virtual.
I didn't get a chance to give him the info needed for this virtual, humboldt flier suddenly left us for that never ending power trail on July 22,2022 humboldt flier Gone But Not Forgotten
