Geocache Description:

Pakenham Five Arched Stone Bridge

The 5 Span Bridge was originally built in 1901 by Scottish Stone Masons (O'Toole & Keating of Ottawa), over the Mississippi river and rapids in Pakenham, and was created with stones that came from a local quarry.

This five-arch bridge is one of kind in North America and is believed to be the only one of its kind in the world outside of Russia.

Originally the bridge was built for horses and carriages, which led to the stability of the bridge to be compromised once automobiles were invented. This led to the bridge being restored in 1984, where the stones were carefully removed and identified, before being reinstated into their original position over the reinforced concrete structure used to strengthen the bridge for modern day use.
