Geocache Description:

Stonehenge - Maryhill

The Maryhill Stonehenge Memorial was built as a replica of England's Stonehenge and is the first monument in the United States to honor the World War I Veterans – specifically, soldiers from Klickitat County, Washington.

In 1915 at the beginning of World War I, Samuel Hill visited the original Stonehenge in England.  Hill’s understanding of Stonehenge as a site of human sacrifice led him to use the ancient monument as a model for a World War I memorial in the USA.

During the building process, Sam Hill initially planned to use a local quarried stone for the memorial, but changed his mind for a more durable alternative. The Maryhill Stonehenge Memorial was constructed from cast-in-place and steel-reinforced concrete. To simulate the texture of hand-hewn stone, wood forms were used for each of the memorial’s concrete elements and were lined with crumpled sheets of tin.

Unlike the ancient Stonehenge, the Maryhill Stonehenge Memorial was aligned to the astronomical horizon rather than the actual midsummer sunrise. This results in a three degree difference from the original structure in England. Combined with a five degree difference in latitude and the way that the surrounding hills obscure the actual horizon, Stonehenge Memorial is difficult to use as an astronomical calendar.

There were two dedications of the Maryhill Stonehenge Memorial.  The first dedication occurred on July 4, 1918, when the altar stone was completed and was the earliest World War I memorial in the country.  A plaque was placed with the following message:

“To the memory of the soldiers and sailors of Klickitat County who gave their lives in defense of their country. This monument is erected in hope that others inspired by the example of their valor and their heroism may share in that love of liberty and burn with that fire of patriotism which death alone can quench.”

The second dedication occurred once the Stonehenge Memorial structure was finally completed, and it was dedicated on Memorial Day, May 30, 1929.

The Stonehenge Memorial (#100006703) was assigned to the National Register of Historic Places on June 28, 2021.

Logging Requirements:

You may use certitude and then you do NOT need to message or email me the five answers, simply input them into the checker below. (this is just to prevent my inbox with being flooded with messages).

When entering your answer use this method:  369Smith25EquitySizer  (NO spaces)
The above represents "36" columns, "9" columns with double plaques, "Smith" oldest Vet,"25" Trilithon Horseshoe
and "EquitySizer" for EQSR - These are not the correct answers, just an example.

After submitting the correct answers (
Do not use "Stay anonymous"), certitude will give you a set of the listed coordinates and a message that your input was correct.  You must either get a correct checker in certitude or message/email me the correct answers, then you may log your find.  Without a positive checker or no message, then your log will be deleted.

Remember to post a photo with your log, but do not post the answers to the questions.

You can validate your puzzle solution with certitude.
