You are standing where a bridge used to connect Riverview to Moncton. The Gunningsville Bridge was originally constructed in 1867. Since then there have been four additional versions of this same crossing, including the one you can see on your left, currently crossing the river.

The 4th iteration of the bridge, known as the "old" bridge was notoriously narrow and caused countless accidents. Motorists would often lose the passenger side mirrors of their vehicles when attempting to dodge oncoming traffic. That bridge was replaced by the current one in 2005. It also included a new bypass along Vaughn Harvey Blvd that allows motorists to go under the railway track. Previously, cars could only access the bridge from downtown via Assomption Blvd.
From this spot, you can see remnants of the previous bridge along the bank on the other side of the river. Although the road itself is now covered by grass, a portion of one of the bridge pillars has become more visible as the river has widened.

To claim this cache, you must perform the following:
- Take a picture of yourself (face does not need to be included, but can be if you choose) with the old pillar showing in the background. Photos that do not show some portion of the old pillar will NOT be accepted, and your log will be DELETED!
- You will have better luck if it is low tide. A tide schedule for Moncton can be found here.
- Below is a photo of the pillar as seen at low tide
Hope you enjoy this new virtual!
