St. Vrain Greenway
In the fall of 2013 the State of Colorado was experiencing severe drought conditions across the state. However that changed in September as a cold front stalled over the state and warm monsoon moisture moved in from the south creating conditions for heavy rainfall all along the front range. In Boulder County, both the St. Vrain and Left Hand Creek watersheds received historic rainfall. Boulder recorded a total of 9” of rain on September 11th and 12th and upwards of over 17” total rainfall by the 15th.
The result of all this rain created severe flooding in the foothills. The drainages of both St. Vrain and Left Hand Creek overflowed the banks. The towns downstream experienced flooding, washed out roads and entire neighborhoods were inundated with flood waters.

In the aftermath this disaster, the City of Longmont has engaged in effort to restore the creek. Extensive work has been completed through town by widening the creek and upgrading bridges to allow for potential future floods. The St. Vrain Greenway has been restored and improved to allow greater public access for recreational uses including biking, walking, fishing and float tube/kayaking. The current plan has over 8 miles of paved trails starting at Airport Road and ending on the East side at Sandstone Ranch. The area has several nature areas including Golden Ponds, Roger's Grove, Izaak Walton, Sandstone Ranch, and Dickens Farm just East of Main Street.
