Aotea Square created in 1979 as a large, paved public area. The place is busy with people, displays and sometimes protests. A lovely part of the city to visit and enjoy.
At the Queen Street entrance is an arch called 'Waharoa' (Gateway in Maori). Made from wood and cooper by Selwyn Muru, it is an expressionist version of a traditional Maori entry gate. The structure has been decorated with many colourful symbols.
