Las dos flechas

 Caminando por el número 32 de la Gran Vía es fácil darse cuenta de que hay dos flechas talladas en el suelo. 

Cada una de ellas tiene aproximadamente un metro de longitud y tanto su orientación como su ubicación no son consecuencia del azar, sino que tienen su razón de ser gracias a la mitología romana.

Para comprender lo que tenemos bajo nuestros pies, a veces es necesario echar un vistazo al cielo. 

En el número 31 de la Gran Vía, el edificio que hay enfrente de las flechas está coronado por una imponente escultura dorada de Diana La Cazadora. La diosa de la caza aparece lanzando con su arco, acompañada por cinco perros.

Walking through number 32 of the Gran Vía, it is easy to notice that there are two arrows carved into the ground.

Each of them is approximately one meter in length and both their orientation and their location are not the result of chance, but have their reason for being thanks to Roman mythology.

To understand what we have under our feet, sometimes it is necessary to take a look at the sky.

At number 31 Gran Vía, the building in front of the arrows is crowned by an imposing golden sculpture of Diana the Huntress. The goddess of the hunt appears shooting with her bow, accompanied by five dogs.

 Parece que la diosa falla al lanzar dos de sus flechas, que se quedan clavadas en la acera pero, ¿cuál es el blanco de sus lanzamientos?

En el número 32 de la Gran Vía encontramos otra escultura en el tejado. Es del Ave Fénix, que lleva en su lomo a Endimión, un joven pastor al que Diana visitaba todas las noches tras bajar de la Luna. 

El romance entre el pastor y su hija Diana llegó a oídos de Zeus que, enfurecido, envió al Ave Fénix para secuestrar a Endimión y ocultarle de su hija por toda la eternidad. Pero Diana no renuncia a su amor, y ataca al Ave Fénix con sus flechas.

Es justo ese momento el que queda representado en este espacio de la Gran Vía, que se ha convertido en un lugar de culto para todos los amantes de la mitología.

Nota:

Si nos ceñimos a la mitología griega, la protagonista de la historia no es Diana sino Selene, la titánide de la Luna, que es hija de Hiperión y Tea, y hermana de Helios y Eos. Pero en la actualidad se tiende a invisibilizar a los titanes. En su lugar se pone a otros dioses con características semejantes, como Artemisa.

At number 32 Gran Vía we find another sculpture on the roof. It is from the Phoenix Bird, which carries Endymion on its back, a young shepherd that Diana visited every night after coming down from the Moon.

The romance between the shepherd and his daughter Diana reached the ears of Zeus who, enraged, sent the Phoenix Bird to kidnap Endymion and hide him from his daughter for all eternity. But Diana does not give up her love, and she attacks the Phoenix Bird with her arrows.

It is precisely that moment that is represented in this space on the Gran Vía, which has become a place of worship for all lovers of mythology.

Note:

If we stick to Greek mythology, the protagonist of the story is not Diana but Selene, the Titan of the Moon, who is the daughter of Hyperion and Thea, and sister of Helios and Eos. But nowadays there is a tendency to make the titans invisible. In his place, other gods with similar characteristics are put, such as Artemis.
