Ilkley Virtual - The Old Bridge
To Claim this Virtual Cache:
1. Make your way to the published coordinates where you will be standing in the middle of the Old Bridge. Take a photo looking downstream from the bridge showing as much of yourself as you are prepared to reveal and post this with your log.
2. Head to the southern end of the bridge and take the steps down to the riverside walk. Once at the foot of these look back towards the lower part of the bridge wall. Here you will see some inscriptions carved into the stone. Please a) say what these are and b) note the date of the one nearest to the steps and c) send the info to me via the Message Centre on the cache web-page or by email to forshaw.chris@gmail.com
Kindly note that only Found It logs meeting these two requirements will be accepted.
Nearby Parking: you should be able to find either roadside parking near the bridge or (except on very bsuy days) a space in the parking area at the nearby riverside hotel 100m east of the bridge.
The Old Bridge, a two-arch stone bridge, was originally a packhorse bridge built in 1675, close to the ford by which the Roman road to Boroughbridge crossed the River Wharfe. At this location over hundreds of years prior to the construction of the stone bridge (back to Roman times and possibly earlier) there was a succession of wooden bridges all washed away in the periodic flooding of the river.
