Geocache Description:

Jolimont Square

Charles Joseph La Trobe (1801-1875) arrived in Port Phillip in 1839 and purchased an expanse of land incorporating this site in 1840. La Trobe paid £250 for the land, which he named 'Jolimont' after the village in Switzerland where he and his wife Sophie had honeymooned.

In 1884 the site was purchased by Mrs Tabitha Ball, widow of Charles Ball, who was one of the founders of the Ball and Welch department store chain. Jolimont Square was owned by Tabitha Ball until 1902, whose heirs re-purchased 'Mornington' in 1903.

In 1924, The Balls sold the property to the Adult Deaf and Dumb Society of Victoria, who retained ownership until 2001. Jolimont Square was used by the Society for its institute, hostel, and secondary college.
