Geocache Description:

Old Parliament House

The coordinates take you to a corner of Old Parliament House.

On the wall in front of you is a sign. Count the number of letters on the sign, excluding the "&" and remember that number, call it AB

A visit to Old Parliament House is not to be missed whatever your political persuasion or interest. Entry is free, although bookings are encouraged.

To complete this Virtual Cache, enter the building and make your way up to the First (Main) Floor where the Prime Minister’s Suite is located.

Three Prime Ministers served in this office between 1972 and 1988: Gough Whitlam from 1972-1975, Malcolm Fraser from 1975-1983, and Bob Hawke from 1983-1988.

The Prime Minister’s Office is not much larger than many living rooms. Passing traffic and noise from demonstrations could be heard and viewed through its windows - representative of an open approach to leadership. In the end, it was viewed as a security issue, impossible to secure against threats, and one of the reasons why a new Parliament House was constructed.

In its current configuration the Prime Minister’s Office is presented as it was during Bob Hawke’s term of office, as the last Prime Minister to work in Old Parliament House.

Each Prime Minister was entitled to display works of art from the National Gallery of Australia. Bob Hawke chose to display just one painting. Despite his gregarious nature, Hawke enjoyed his solitude. Reportedly, sometimes late at night, he would sit alone at his desk, smoking a cigar and gazing into this landscape painting.
