The symbol of Iași is the Palace of Culture, a neo-Gothic architectural masterpiece, built between 1906-1925 on the ruins of the old Princely Court of Moldova.

This is the statue of the most important and long-lived ruler of Moldavia, Ștefan cel Mare (Stephen the Great) which was unveiled in 1883 in front of the former Administrative Palace. The monument is the work of the french sculptor Emmanuel Frémiet and has spawned controversy since his inauguration because the bearded character has a catholic crown. The sculptor is also famous for his 1874 sculpture of Joan of Arc from Paris.

There were some rumors that it was a mistake in the delivery of the statue of Stefan cel Mare (Stephen the Great), and the real one was sent to Krakow, and this is a voivode from Poland, but the rumors were debunked easy because the front of the statue has the moldavian coat of arms.

The bronze monument is 4.5 m tall and stands on a pink Carrara marble socket.

On the sides of the socket are two bas-reliefs of famous battles: the one from Podu Înalt (High-bridge) in 1475, and from Codrii Cosminului (Cosmin Woods) in 1497.

Next to the statue there are two Krupp canons captured during the 1877 Independence War, marking the end of the ottoman influence in this region.
