Sopron a leghűségesebb város, a Tűztorony pedig Sopron városának szimbóluma.
Ki ne ismerné a Tűztornyot, Sopron jelképét, 2011. óta Magyarország történelmi emlékhelyei közé tartozó épületet, melynek erkélyéről páratlan kilátás nyílik a városra?
A Tűztorony barokk hagymakupolája a kétfejű sassal 58 méter magasra emelkedik, így a város több pontjáról is jól látható. Közel 200 csigalépcsőjének megmászása után, körerkélyéről páratlan kilátás nyílik a belvárosra és a Sopront körülölelő Lövérekre, tiszta időben akár az Alpok közeli vonulatai (Rax, Schneeberg) is láthatóak.
Mai alakját, reneszánsz körerkélyét és barokk kupoláját az 1676-os tűzvész után nyerte el, amikor a torony felső része teljesen leégett.
A torony őreinek sokrétű feladatuk volt:
- figyelve a vidéket, éjjel lámpással, nappal színes zászlókkal jelezték a tűzfészek irányát
- a város lakóinak figyelmét felhívták az idegen katonák, idegen bort szállító szekerek közeledtére
- a muzsikáláshoz is érteniük kellett, mert a városi tanáccsal kötött szerződésük szerint esküvőkön, temetéseken vagy városi mulatságokban ők szolgáltatták a zenét
- a soproniaknak az idő múlását negyed óránként trombitaszóval jelezték, a XVI. századtól pedig a toronyórát is kezelték.
A torony a hűség jelképe is: az 1921. december 14-i népszavazáson Sopron és nyolc község a Magyarországhoz való tartozás mellett döntött. Ennek emlékére készült 1928-ban a barokkos kapukeret Hikisch Rezső tervei alapján. A felette elhelyezett szoborcsoport - Hungária maga köré gyűjti a város hűséges lakóit - Kisfaludi Stróbl Zsigmond alkotása. A meghatározó nap emlékére Hűségkapunak nevezik, rajta az írás: „A Nemzet Sopronnak”, s a kapu feletti városcímerbe bekerült a Civitas Fidelissima felirat. 2001-ben pedig a kormány a hűség napjává nyilvánította december 14-ét.
A torony 2012-ben teljesen megújult, 2020 júniusától pedig Időkapu címmel a torony alatti római és a fogadó szinten látványos kiállítás nyílt, eddig még ki nem állított római és középkori kőfaragványokból.

Sopron - Die Stadt der True
Der Feuerturm ist das Wahrzeichen von Sopron. Wer kennt ihn nicht, den Feuerturm, das Wahrzeichen von Sopron, das Bauwerk, das seit 2011 zu den historischen Gedenkstätten Ungarns gehört und von dessen Balkon die Besucher einen einzigartigen Aussicht auf die Stadt genießen können?
Das barocke Zwiebeldach des Feuerturms erhöht sich mit dem zweiköpfigen Adler 58 Meter hoch, es ist also von mehreren Stellen in der Stadt gut sichtbar. Nach der Besteigung von fast 200 Wendeltreppen öffnet sich auf seinem Rundbalkon ein unvergleichbarer Ausblick auf die Innenstadt und das Sopron umgebende Lőverek. Bei klarem Wetter sind sogar die nahen Gebirgszüge der Alpen (Rax, Schneeberg) zu sehen.
Der Feuerturm gewann seine heutige Form mit dem Rundbalkon aus der Renaissance und der Barockhaube nach dem Schadenfeuer 1676, in dem der obere Teil des Turms vollkommen abbrannte.
Die Arbeit der Turmwächter war vielfältig:
- sie beobachteten die Gegend und meldeten die Richtung des Brandherdes nachts mit Laternen und tags mit farbigen Fahnen,
- sie kündigten die nähernden fremden Soldaten und fremden Weinkutschen den Stadtbewohnern an,
- sie mussten auch musizieren können, da sie aufgrund ihres Vertrags mit dem Stadtrat auf Hochzeiten, Beerdigungen und Stadtvergnügen als Musiker dienten,
- sie gaben den Sopronern im Viertelstundentakt durch Trompetenklang vom Rundbalkon an, wie die Zeit vergeht; ab dem 16. Jahrhundert bedienten sie auch die Turmuhr.
Der Turm gilt auch als Symbol der Treue: bei der Volksabstimmung am 14. Dezember 1921 entschieden sich Sopron und acht Gemeinden dafür, zu Ungarn zu gehören. Als deren Gedenken wurde das barockisierende Portal nach dem Konzept von Rezső Hikisch im Jahr 1928 erstellt. Die Statuengruppe über dem Portal - Hungaria sammelt die treuen Stadtbewohner um sich - ist ein Werk von Zsigmond Kisfaludi Stróbl. Als Gedenken an den entscheidenden Tag wurde es Tor der Treue genannt und mit folgender Schrift versehen: „Die Nation an Sopron“. Ins Stadtwappen über dem Tor wurde die Aufschrift Civitas Fidelissima hinzugefügt. 2001 erklärte die ungarische Regierung den 14. Dezember den Tag der Treue.

Sopron - The town of the loyalty
The Fire Tower is a symbol of the town of Sopron.
Who doesn’t know the Fire Tower, the symbol of Sopron, a building that has been one of the historical monuments of Hungary since 2011, with a balcony that provides an unparalleled view of the town?
The baroque onion dome of the Fire Tower rises to a height of 58 meters with the two-headed eagle, so it can be clearly seen from several parts of the town. After climbing its nearly 200 spiral stairs, its round balcony offers an unparalleled view of the town centre and the Lövérek surrounding Sopron, and in clear weather, you can even see the nearby mountains of the Alps (Rax, Schneeberg).
Its renaissance round balcony and baroque helmet were built after the fire of 1676, when the upper part of the tower burned down completely.
The guards of the Fire Tower had diverse tasks:
- watching the neighbouring area, signalling the direction of the fire nest with lanterns at night and colourful flags during the day
- they warned the town residents when foreign soldiers or carts transporting foreign wine were approaching
- they also had to be competent in playing music, because according to their contract with the city council, they provided the music at weddings, funerals and festivals
- the people of Sopron were reminded to the passage of time with a trumpet from the balcony every quarter of an hour, and from the 16th century they operated the tower clock as well.
The tower is also a symbol of loyalty: as a result of the referendum of 14 December 1921, Sopron and eight villages decided to belong to Hungary. To commemorate the event, a baroque gate frame was made in 1928 according to the plans of Rezső Hikisch. The group of sculptures above it - Hungária gathers the loyal inhabitants of the town around herself - is the work of Zsigmond Kisfaludi Stróbl. To commemorate the significant day, it is called the Gate of Loyalty, with the inscription “Sopron to the Nation” and the inscription “Civitas Fidelissima” was incorporated in the town’s coat of arms above the gate. In 2001, the Hungarian government declared December 14 the Day of Loyalty.
