Geocache Description:

The listed co-ordinates will  take you to a significant tree in the park and one we highlighted in a previous cache.

Bundoora Park contains more than 100 superb examples of River Red Gums (Eucalyptus camaldulensis). Many are huge and must be well over 300 years old. This tree is relatively small by comparison and carries an elliptical scar about 1 metre from the ground. The tree is encircled by a 2.5m high fence. The scar has been verified by the National Museum as being created by Aboriginal people removing the bark over 100 years ago.

Canoe trees such as this were once common in the Melbourne area , but this is one of the few remaining. It is still alive, which makes it all the more important. Experts believe the bark was probably removed at about the same time that the first white people arrived in the Preston area.

Logging Requirements

Include a photograph with your log of yourself in front of the trees scar. Please include something that identifies you and your caching name/s. and your team with the tree located in the background..
