King Kaumuali’i
The Kaua’i Kingdom consists of the islands of Kaua’i, Ni’ihau, Lehua, Ka’ula and Nihoa.
On the day the King made his final journey to his permanent home here at Pa’ula’ula, he toured the five moku of Kaua’i from Halele’a in the north, where he gazed across to Napali, then passed through the moku of Ko’olau and Puna and finally reached Kona, where he now stands.
From here the King oversees the moku of Ni’ihau and Lehua, Ka’ula and over the horizon to Nihoa.

King Kaumuali’i Statue
The 8-foot tall bronze statue of Kaua’i King Kaumauali’i was erected in March 2021 to recognize this important Hawaiian ali’i nui (high chief). Born of high rank in 1778, the same year that Captain James Cook landed in Waimea, his life was shaped by contact with foreign explorers, traders, military, and missionaries. But his role as King of Kaua’i also brought him into conflict with Kamehameha I as he forged an independence for his island.
He stood strang and retained an enduring spiritual bond with this land known as Pa’ula’ula.
As you visit, please show respect for the King and Pa’ula’ula. The fort is now over 200 years old and the stack rock walls are unstable.
