Yinnar may be a small town but it has a big heart, and is a vibrant part of the Gippsland creative arts and performance community.
Across the road from the Guitar Man (aka Johnnie Be Good) is the Art Resource Collective (arc), an artist-run, not-for-profit organisation. It is believed to be the first artist-run initiative of its type in Victoria. The arc story began in 1982 with regular meetings to form the group; moving into the current premises in Main Street, Yinnar in 1983. The group of artists took the opportunity to make use of and renovate the disused Yinnar Butter Factory, which now houses a theatrette, 2 galleries, private studios and public access areas for printmaking, ceramics, metalwork, photography, painting and drawing. Yinnar hosts the annual Gippsland Sculpture Exhibition, where over 80 sculptures are exhibited over 7 weeks along the Main Street and inside arc Galleries. Some of these sculptures have become permanent fixtures in the town, including Guitar Man, the mirror car, the jumping kangaroos and our horse friend on the corner across from Guitar Man. On to the music scene, and very close to where you are standing, is the local pub, which is proud to host the local hometown hero's The Strzelecki Stringbusters on the last Wednesday of the month. A 14 piece string band, which play music ranging from bluegrass and western swing to country and the blues. Great music, fantastic fun, and bookings are essential as the pub is bursting when the boys are playing. (Source: Strzelecki Stringbusters Facebook page)
Yinnar was also the original home of The Davidson Brothers, a bluegrass and country duo who many of the locals will remember playing and busking from a very early age. After winning their original Golden Guitar in Tamworth in 2009, they can now claim five Golden Guitars and are known for their high powered acoustic performances. The have performed across Australia, recorded in Nashville and are regulars at the Tamworth country music festival. (Source: Davidson Brothers website)
While you are here take a stroll down the Main Street, see how many other sculptures you can spot, check out the beautiful community garden behind arc and admire its mosaics, and maybe treat yourself to a coffee and cake from one of the local stores.
