Beattie 🐢 Mounds Virtual Cache

Have you ever been to the quaint Beattie Park nestled along the shores of the Rock River?  If you have, did you know that all three different types of Native American mounds are at this one park?  These unique mounds were built during the late Woodland period, around A.D. 700-1100. The mounds were created by Native American tribes as a place of gathering, peace, and burial.  Isn't it cool to think about all of the unique history Rockford has?

This park is on the National Register of Historic Places as it consists of three conical mounds (one outside the park boundaries), an effigy mound in the shape of a turtle, and a linear mound.  The land was once owned by two sisters, Anna and Mary Beattie who donated the land to the District in 1920 with the stipulation that the site be a “place of rest and relaxation...”  The Beatties also expressed that the mounds and native trees not be destroyed but rather preserved, as the mounds are the most visible evidence of cultures that lived for hundreds of years in the mix of biomes in northern Illinois.  Nearly every year, Rockford's Native American Awareness Committee hosts an “Honor the Mounds” event at Beattie Park.
