Geocache Description:

Built in 1907, this building was called the Hall of Records. It occupies an entire city block bounded by Chambers Street the south, Centre Street to the east, Reade Street to the north, and Elk Street to the west. In 1962, the building, which still houses the city's historical records was renamed to Surrogate's Court.

This beautiful architectually styled Beaux Arts building now houses the Municipal Archives, the New York County Clerk Archives, New York County's Surrogates Court and the Municipal Library.  It is a treasure trove of information for genealogists, historians and researchers. There are important documents dating from the early seventeenth century to the present. The Municipal Archives comprises the largest local government archive in North America.

The inside of the building is as beautiful and ornate as the outside.  It can be seen as the backdrop for many TV shows and movies including many episodes of Law and Order-SVU, Person of Interest, Bull, Batman Forever, Ghostbusters and John Wick.

To Claim this Virtual Reward:  At the coordinates is a plaque telling the history of the building.  Message me the last date on the plaque.
