Geocache Description:

Mount Carleton is located in New Brunswick Canada as is part of the Appalachian Trail. Mount Carleton has an approximate elevation of about 820m (2,690ft), and is the highest peak in the Maritimes. Other notable peaks within the Mount Carleton Provincial Park are Mount Head with an elevation of 792 m (2,589ft), Mount Sagamook with a elevation of 777 m (2,549ft) and Mount Bailey with an elevation of 564m (1,850ft).

Given that Mount Carleton is the highest peak, it offers amazing and calming views at peak. Depending on the cell reception you may even be able to sit back and enjoy the view while logging this virtual.

At the peak of the mountain there is a Geodetic Survey Monument about 30m from the lookout tower which you will need to locate to help with logging this cache. This monument is a passive control monument and was place by the Geodetic Survey of Canada. Monuments like this one was the only access surveyors had to national and provincial coordinate refence frames and surveyors had to use terrestrial survey methods with these passive monuments. With the availability of GNSS (GPS) systems, active control stations are now widely used with the reference frames available through the use of accurate GNSS receivers.

To claim this virtual as found you must Answer the question and share two photos as described below.

1. What type of survey benchmark is this monument? (Hint: it is inscribed on the actual monument Circle Benchmark)

2. Add photo with a personal items, or yourself directly to the cache page with the lookout tower in the background.

If you having trouble locating the monument or want to feel like a survey before the use of GPS feel free to locate the monument using the description from the official station report:
