State Library Victoria is one of Melbourne's founding institutions, established over 170 years ago in 1854, barely 20 years after the city was settled. It opened as the Melbourne Public Library, and is not only Australia's oldest and busiest public library but also one of the first free public libraries in the world.
When asked to name their favourite space in the State Library, most visitors nominate the glorious La Trobe Reading Room. No visit to Melbourne is complete without a Dome selfie, whether taken from the floor of the reading room looking up to the dome, or from an elevated perch on the 6th-floor balcony.
Opened in 1913, the magnificent octagonal reading room is six storeys high and can house 32,000 books and 320 readers at its desks.
When it was built, the enormous reinforced-concrete structure was the largest in the world. Known as the Domed Reading Room until it was refurbished and reopened in 2003, the building is an architectural feat and is a prime example of Edwardian splendour, the design being inspired by the British Museum in London and Washington's Library of Congress.
The upper galleries were originally serviced by spiral metal staircases, which can still be seen in the corners of the room.
The reading room is a quiet space for study, with radiating reading desks featuring their trademark green glass light shades and original silky oak chairs.
The La Trobe Reading Room can be accessed by stairs or lift from both the Swanston Street Welcome Zone and Cowen Gallery. Lifts run to the Dome Galleries when these spaces are open.

To log this virtual you will need to post two photos:
Photo 1. At the listed coordinates you will find an architectural fragment. Take a photo of this that includes at least part of your body.
Photo 2. Make your way to the La Trobe Reading Room (signposted also as “The Dome“ and listed as a waypoint - THIS IS DIFFERENT TO THE REDMOND BARRY READING ROOM) and take a photo of yourself reading there.
Your photos must be posted in your "Found It" log. Do not send them to me by email or message. Logs not supported by photos as requested may be deleted after a week or two.
Top tip for posting more than one photo in a log
For some reason the Official Geocaching app only allows you to add one photo to a log, but the website doesn’t. So, to log your find via the app, scroll to the bottom of the cache page and tap on “Open in browser“. This will take you to the website version of the page where you can log your find just the same using the green button top right, but add as many photos as you like. From the website you can even go back and edit your log to add titles to your photos!
