Vers 1h30 le matin du 29 juin 1864 un train du Grand Tronc en provenance de Québec s'aventura sur le pont alors que celui-ci était ouvert pour laisser passer des barges sur la rivière Richelieu. Le mécanicien du train qui n'était pas familier avec le trajet, n'aurait pas immobilisé le train à l'entrée du pont comme voulait la procédure. Il n'aurait pas également vu le feu rouge avisant du danger. Par conséquent, la locomotive et les 11 wagons passagers tombèrent dans la rivière causant la mort de 97 immigrants et de 2 employés du Grand Tronc. Le mécanicien du train a survécu à l'accident et il a été tenu responsable de la tragédie. La photo de l'accident fût la toute première photo prise à Beloeil.
Around 1:30 am on June 29, 1864, a Grand Tronc train from Quebec City ventured onto the bridge while it was open to allow barges to pass on the Richelieu River. The train engineer, who was not familiar with the route, allegedly did not stop the train at the entrance to the bridge as required. He also did not see the red light warning of the danger. As a result, the locomotive and 11 passenger cars fell into the river, killing 97 immigrants and 2 Grand Tronc employees. The train engineer survived the accident and was held responsible for the tragedy. The photo of the accident was the first photo ever taken in Beloeil.

Le parc La Halte des Vapeurs commémore ce triste évêment (L'Oeil Régional - Le journal de la Vallée du Richelieu (oeilregional.com)). Vous trouverez dans ce parc la sculture "Point Pivot" commémorant cet accident. Cette sculpture est l'oeuvre de l'artiste Julie Robert. Les 11 plaques en acier symbolisent les 11 wagons du train no 168. Les noms des 44 familles ayant eu au moins une victime sont gravés à l'intérieur des plaques.
The La Halte des Vapeurs park commemorates this sad event (L'Oeil Régional - Le journal de la Vallée du Richelieu (oeilregional.com)).
