Geocache Description:

Manito Park located in the City of Spokane South Hill since 1903 is known for its many historic features and home to 90 acres of manicured lawns, gardens, playgrounds and a duck pond. Thousands of locals and tourists visit the park annually for recreation and serenity. Among the historic features in the park is little known garden dedicated in 2018 by Spokane Central Lions Club to Helen Keller for planting a Silver Linden Tree in 1925.

Helen Keller worked for the American Foundation for the Blind (AFB) from 1924 until 1968. During this time she toured the United States and 35 countries around the globe advocating for those with vision loss. While details on her trip to Spokane WA are hard to find, local historians Tony and Suzanne Bamonte interviewed Spokane Pioneer James Patrick McGoldrick II, who told the story about attending a tree planting by Helen Keller when he was a boy. "McGoldrick’s word was solid gold, and if he said it’s the tree, it’s the tree,” Tony said.

In this small garden you will find two benches engraved with quotes from the famous humanitarian and a braille plaque explaining the story of Helen Keller planting the tree and a variety of fragrant flowers.

To claim this cache: simply post a picture of yourself, or something you own, like a GPS or phone at the Silver Linden Tree in your log. Group photos are acceptable, but I request all cacher profile names mentioned in the log with the photo, and log dates be the same.
