At the listed coordinates you will get a great close-up view of an iconic Tasmanian brewery. The brewery was founded in 1832 and is the oldest running brewery in Australia with the first beer sold in December 1832.
The Brewery site was originally a saw mill, which started in 1825. Its co-founders were brothers-in-law Hugh McIntosh (a British Army Major) and Peter Degraves (an ex convict). Both arrived in Tasmania in 1824.
Hugh Macintosh died in 1834 and Peter Degraves then managed the brewing operation and a new sawmill, becoming one of Hobart Town's richest men, but he wasn't popular in Hobart Town as they thought he used more water than he was entitled to and reduced Hobart's water supply!
The brewery is housed in a 19th century building located near the base of Mount Wellington next to the Hobart Rivulet.
Untill 2011 it was believed Degraves designed the brewery while in prison and commenced building it when he was released but some historians now believe that it was actually Hugh MacIntosh who started the local brewery while Peter Degraves was still serving his sentence.
Over the years many more buildings were added and the local drop became a well known household name.
On 7 February 1967, as Australia’s first rip-top cans were being filled at the brewery a deadly fire happened, known as Black Tuesday, which killed 62 people. Hobart was hit hard and many buildings burned down including the local brewery.
Immediately after the fire, work began on rebuilding the complex. Another brewery in Launceston which the local brewery had bought in 1927, increased production so that the people of Tasmania wouldn't go thirsty. Three months and 1 day later, the local brewery was bottling beer again at the original site. At its peak in 1983, the local brewery held 95% of the beer market in Tasmania.
The brewery continues to brew beer using pure water from Mount Wellington with Tasmanian hops and barley.
