Geocache Description:

The sign at the posted coordinates contains photographs and details about the history of this park and the Borough of Chester Heights.

The Stand

For over 50 years a small store stood on this site. It was originally opened as Curran's Stand. James Curran (1863-1944), an immigrant from Northern Ireland, purchased this property from Anna A. Purcell on February 1, 1928. In his will he left the property to his daughter, Mary Curran. Mary, who died in May, 1948, left the property to her sister Anne Curran DiSalvo and her husband Charles DiSalvo. On October 3, 1956, the deed was transferred to Charles William DiSalvo and his wife Jean B. DiSalvo. A variety of products were sold at the stand including gasoline, kerosene, cigars and cigarettes, as well as candy and a variety of sodas. The busiest time of year was in the summer when the nearby Chester Heights Camp Meeting was active. At one point, there was even a jukebox and pinball machine. The DiSalvo family operated the stand for over 40 years. Chester Heights Borough purchased the property in the fall of 2011 with plans to establish open space. DiSalvo Park was dedicated to the DiSalvo family in 2021.

Chester Heights Fire Company

Chester Heights Fire Company was incorporated in 1947 to serve the Borough of Chester Heights and nearby townships. It is an all volunteer fire company, with members living in the borough and the surrounding communities. Throughout its history, the company has had many firsts in Delaware County and the State of Pennsylvania; it was one of the first to offer Quick Response Service (QRS), one of the first to carry an AED, the first company in Pennsylvania to have a state certified rescue truck, and the first in Delaware County to offer a certified dive team. Currently the Chester Heights Fire Company has approximately 35 certified volunteers and five pieces of fire apparatus. In 2022, the Chester Heights Fire Company is celebrating its 75th Anniversary.
