"Das Kapital" ist das bekannteste Werk des in Chemnitz monumental dargestellten Philosophen, Ökonomen, Gesellschaftstheoretikers, politischen Journalisten, Historikers, und Kritikers des Kapitalismus und der Religion Karl Heinrich Marx:
Im Kapital geht es nicht um „Gesellschaft schlechthin“ oder um „'das' menschliche Wirtschaften“, vielmehr wird eine ganz besondere Gesellschaftsform und eine ganz besondere Form des Wirtschaftens analysiert: Die Kritik der Politischen Ökonomie – so der Untertitel des Werkes – steht für die grundsätzliche Kritik sowohl der kapitalistischen Produktionsweise als auch der durchgesetzten bürgerlichen Theorie derselben (Wirtschaftswissenschaften, besonders Volkswirtschaftslehre) zur Zeit von Marx.
Marx' Kritik legt dar, dass es sich bei Gesellschaften mit kapitalistischer Produktionsweise um Klassengesellschaften handle, in denen sich das Privateigentum an den Produktionsmitteln durch die Indienstnahme von Lohnarbeit vermehre. So akkumuliere sich der Reichtum in Form von Kapital, während seine Produzenten dauerhaft von ihm ausgeschlossen seien: Beteiligt am Reichtum seien laut Marx die Arbeiter nur insoweit, als die Benutzung ihrer Arbeitskraft ihre Entlohnung notwendig mache.
Zweitens richtet sich das Kapital gegen die politische Herrschaft, die ihre Gewalt ganz in den Dienst des Kapitals stelle und die Abhängigkeit der arbeitenden Klasse vom Privateigentum rechtlich absichere.
Marx behauptet, dass dies von Menschen gemachte Verhältnisse seien. Dennoch wirkten sie hinter dem Rücken der Gesellschaftsmitglieder, erschienen ihnen als den Dingen innewohnende Sachnotwendigkeiten; ihr Charakter als 'Verhältnisse von Personen' sei verschleiert. Marx bezeichnet diesen Umstand in Analogie zu religiösen Einbildungen als Warenfetisch.

1953 erfolge anlässlich des „Karl-Marx-Jahres“ die Umbenennung von Chemnitz in Karl-Marx-Stadt. Die Umwandlung des historischen Chemnitz gemäß dem sozialistischen Städtebau sollte mit einem Monument zu Ehren des neuen Namensgebers verkörpert werden. Der Entwurf des sowjetischen Bildhauer Lew Kerbel wurde in der Kunstgießerei Monument Skulptura in Leningrad in Bronze gegossen, in Einzelteile zerlegt und anschließend vom Volkseigenen Betrieb (VEB) Germania in Karl-Marx-Stadt wieder zusammengeschweißt. Das Denkmal wurde am 9. Oktober 1971 eingeweiht. Trotz der Rückbenennung der Stadt im Jahr 1990 blieb das Monument erhalten und ist bis heute wohl das Wahrzeichen der Stadt und erinnert noch immer an die bewegte Geschichte von Chemnitz.

In Das Kapital (1867), Marx proposes that the motivating force of capitalism is in the exploitation of labor, whose unpaid work is the ultimate source of surplus value. The owner of the means of production is able to claim the right to this surplus value because they are legally protected by the ruling regime through property rights and the legally established distribution of shares which are by law distributed only to company owners and their board members. The historical section shows how these rights were acquired in the first place chiefly through plunder and conquest and the activity of the merchant and "middle-man". In producing capital, the workers continually reproduce the economic conditions by which they labour. Das Kapital proposes an explanation of the "laws of motion" of the capitalist economic system from its origins to its future by describing the dynamics of the accumulation of capital, the growth of wage labour, the transformation of the workplace, the concentration of capital, commercial competition, the banking system, the decline of the profit rate, land-rents, et cetera.

In 1953, Chemnitz was renamed to Karl-Marx-Stadt to celebrate the Karl Marx Year. The East-German government hired Lev Kerbel, a Sowviet scluptor for designing the 7.1 m tall stylized head of Karl Marx. The sculpture was cast in the art foundry Monument Skulptura in Leningrad in bronce, disassmbled into pieces and welded together by the VEB Germania in Karl-Marx-Stadt. The monument was inaugurated on 9. October 1971. Although the city was renamed back to its previous name Chemnitz in 1990, the monument stayed to remain the most recognized landmark of the city.
