Blå Jungfrun är en isolerad ö med magnifik siluett. Den gråblå granitkupolen reser sig 86 meter över havet i Kalmarsund. Med tanke på öns avskildhet och färgen på dess siluett är det inte konstigt att Blå Jungfrun blivit sagornas och folktrons Blåkulla. Redan på 1400-talet omgavs ön med magiska föreställningar om häxor och trolldom.
Nationalparken är 198 hektar, varav 132 hektar vatten. Ön förvärvades av Torsten Kreuger 1925 och han skänkte den till svenska staten som grundade nationalparken 1926. Parken utvidgades 1988.
Själva urberget är anledningen till att ön blivit skyddad som nationalpark. Graniten dominerar, men här finns också yngre bergarter som intresserat forskare. Öns runda profil och mjukt skulpterade hällar är formade av inlandsisen. Under istiden bildades också öns många jättegrytor. I den frodiga ädellövskogen söder om toppen växer en ymnig flora och sällsynta lavar. Lövskogen är hem för en rad ovanliga skalbaggar. Ön har också ett rikt fågelliv med arter som havsörn, skärpiplärka och tobisgrissla.
Blåkulla är den plats dit häxor enligt folktron flög på kvastar under skärtorsdagen för att fira häxsabbat med Djävulen. Orgierna sägs ha pågått till påskaftonen eller påskdagsmorgonen då "häxorna" for hem igen. Stora eldar tändes för att jaga i väg dem.
Under den stora häxjakten åren 1668–1676 spelade berättelser om Blåkulla en stor roll, då barn sade sig ha blivit bortrövade dit av häxor. Barnens vittnesmål gav oftast ett liknande vittnesmål om Blåkulla: På Blåkulla festade man som på ett bondbröllop, man drack och åt och dansade.

[ENG] Blå Jungfrun is an isolated island with a magnificent silhouette. The gray-blue granite dome rises 86 meters above sea level in Kalmarsund. Given the island's seclusion and the color of its silhouette, it is no wonder that Blå Jungfrun has become the Blåkulla of fairy tales and folk beliefs. As early as the 15th century, the island was surrounded by magical notions of "witches" and sorcery.

Blåkulla is the place where witches according to folklore flew on brooms during Maundy Thursday to celebrate witch sabbath with the Devil. The orgies are said to have lasted until Easter Eve or Easter morning when the "witches" went home again. Large fires were lit to chase them away.
During the great witch hunt in the years 1668–1676, stories about Blåkulla played a big role, when children said they had been abducted there by witches. The children's testimonies usually gave a similar testimony about Blåkulla: At Blåkulla they partyed like at a peasant wedding, they drank and ate and danced.
