Gornau (420 - 470 m above sea level) is a village in the Ore Mountains. It has 2,300 inhabitants and is located about 15 km southeast of Chemnitz and 3 km from Zschopau in Saxony. On the sides of the village, which is crossed by the stream of the same name, the terrain rises slightly, so that the village lies in a hollow. The former farming village was initially called "Gorn" (1540). This is an older Serbian terrain name to gorny = mountainous.
The origin of the village is still unknown. Its location on the old trade route (salt route), which led from Hamburg via Magdeburg - Halle - Leipzig - Chemnitz - Prague to Trieste, suggests an early foundation. In Gornau you find the beginning of the settlement in the lower village. The richness of the forest and the brook with its fish lent itself to this. In the middle of the 16th century there were 11 possessed men, 7 gardeners (small farmers) and 11 residents in Gornau.
The development of the village is closely connected with the already mentioned salt road. It brought progress to the village over the centuries. But it also has a lot to tell about hardship and misery, which came to the country in times of war.
The former cottagers' houses in the valley of the village stream, in 1764 there were already 36, indicate the early commercial character of the village. Around the same time, the hosiery industry took root in Gornau. In the now most industrialized village of the Zschopau area, the production of stockings became the most important source of income. From 1936 to 1939, the housing estates on Dittersdorfer Strasse, Försterfeldsiedlung and Eisenstrasse (Kirchensiedlung) were built. In 1929 the consecration of the church took place in the cemetery, which had existed since 1891. After the 1st World War, the Gornau labor sportsmen built the sports field, in 1925 the sports hall and in 1930 the public swimming pool in the headwaters of the village stream.
After the collapse of almost the entire industry of the village, a timid foundation of new enterprises in the service and craft sector began. Since then, due to the measures taken to improve the technical infrastructure (construction of canals, water, gas, etc.), a rapid development of the village took place. Two new housing estates were built, many buildings were reconstructed and a shopping center with a hardware store was established. About 50 companies of various kinds have settled in Gornau. On 01.03.1994 the villages Dittmannsdorf and Witzschdorf were incorporated into Gornau.
