So, what does Halifax have to do with the British Ship Titanic......

The RMS Titanic, a luxury steamship, sank in the early hours of April 15, 1912, off the coast of Newfoundland in the North Atlantic after sideswiping an iceberg during its maiden voyage.  On May 31, 1911, Titanic’s immense hull–the largest movable manmade object in the world at the time–made its way down the slipways and into the River Lagan in Belfast.  It was described at the time as being unsinkable.

Titanic created quite a stir when it departed for its maiden voyage from Southampton, England, on April 10, 1912. After stops in Cherbourg, France, and Queenstown (now known as Cobh), Ireland, the ship set sail for New York with 2,240 passengers and crew—or “souls,” the expression then used in the shipping industry, usually in connection with a sinking—on board. Of the 2,240 passengers and crew on board, more than 1,500 lost their lives in the disaster.  One of the critical safety lapses that contributed to the loss of so many lives was the inadequite number of lifeboats carried on Titanic. A mere 16 boats, plus four Engelhardt “collapsibles,” could accommodate just 1,178 people.  In the end, 705 people survived the sinking of the Titanic.

Four Ships from Canada, including two from Halifax sailed to support the survivors and victims.   They were able to recover 328 victims.  Many were buried at sea, but 209 souls were brought to Halifax, the closest major port to the area of the sinking.  Each soul was assigned a number in order that the bodies were pulled from the water.  Each head stone has this number on it.  With the advent of DNA tsting, some people have been identified over the past 2 decades and their headstones have been updated with their names.

Seventy-three years after it sank to the North Atlantic ocean floor, a joint U.S.-French expedition locates the wreck of the RMS Titanic. The sunken liner was about 400 miles east of Newfoundland in the North Atlantic, some 13,000 feet below the surface.  It is worthy to note that the Titanic gravesite is in the shape of a hull of a ship.  It is with a couple of degrees of the actual resting place of the Titanic.

To claim this Virtual please send me the answers the following questions:

1. The head stone for the the Unknown Child has been identitied (through DNA testing) and a smaller stone with the child's name is at the foot of the head stone.  What is the Unknown Child's name?

2.  What were the names of the two ships that sailed from Halifax?  (It is on the large sign board at the entrance)?

3. Take a picture in the area with yourself or a personal object and post it with your log.
