I have chosen the Organ Pipes for a virtual because my family home is within walking distance and I have come here at least once a year, almost every year for the past 40+ years.
For this virtual you will need to walk approximately 40 minutes up hill from the Organ Pipes car park or you can park by the transmitter on Mt. Cargill and walk approximately 40 minutes from the Mt. Cargill car park to the Organ Pipes. If you are after a longer walk, walk from Bethunes Gully, in North East Valley taking around 2 hours one way.
There are two ways to claim this virtual. If you are confident, you can climb up through the Organ Pipes to the coordinates, please take note of the elevation and email this to me. You will also need to take a photo of yourself and/or your GPS/phone with the Organ Pipes and Mt. Cargill in the background. Please post this photo with your log. You do not need to wait for a reply before logging, however if you do not complete the requirements your log will be deleted.
When climbing through the Organ Pipes, the easiest route is to take the route on the right of the bush (see photo below) and please take care as the pipes/rocks can be slippery when wet. The climb will take approximately 5-10 minutes and is reasonably straight forward, just take your time and be sure of the placement of your feet.For those who don't wish to go to the top of the Organ Pipes, please take note of the elevation at the waypoint which is near the entrance to the Organ Pipes from the bush. Please email this height to me and post a photo of yourself and/or your GPS/phone with the Organ Pipes with your log. 
The Organ Pipes are Basalt columns formed from rapidly cooling lava as it reaches the earths surface. These Basalt columns are around 11 million years old and acquired the name Organ Pipes by the way they tower out of the earth similar to the pipes of an organ. Other basalt columns can be found at Blackhead, Second Beach and on the peninsula at the Pyramids and The Chasm.
