SPORTSMANSHIP PERSONIFIED
The act of sportsmanship, mateship and true Australian spirit is depicted in this statue appropriately located in the Olympic Park Precinct in Melbourne.
During the 1500m final at the Australian National Championships prior to the 1956 Olympics, John Landy stopped mid race and doubled back to check on fellow runner Ron Clarke after another competitor clipped Clarke's heel causing him to fall early in the third lap of the race. Clarke (who was the junior 1500m world champion at the time) had been leading the race but he regrouped and started running again. Landy followed. In the last two laps, John Landy made ground and won the race.
This is considered one of the greatest moments in Australian sporting history.
Both men unsurprisingly went on to be outstanding leaders and continued to set great examples throughout their distinguished lives.
Ron Clarke AO MBE (1937-2015) Olympian, Mayor Gold Coast Queensland (2004-2012)
John Landy AO CVO MBE (1930-2022) Olympian, 26th Governor of Victoria (2001-2006)
